Is it possible to make a wooden backsplash?

Warm, natural and above all ultra trendy, wood is one of the most used materials in decor and interior design. Generally used to make your countertops and kitchen furniture, a wooden backsplash offers many possibilities to add the final little touch to your living space.

Wooden backsplash? Cool or not cool 😀

The pros:

It is one of the noblest materials in interior decoration. Wood is ideal for bringing a natural and warm look to your kitchen. The wooden backsplash is popular for achieving a Scandinavian style. The point I love, and you do too, I think, is that depending on the type of wood, it will develop a patina over time.

The cons:

Generally, raw wood (that is, without protection) is not a big fan of heat, humidity and is susceptible to scratches. But don't worry, there are tricks to avoid bad surprises (see at the end of the article ⤵️)

How to make the right wood choice?

To give you more information, I have made a small list of wood species/types for your custom-made wooden backsplash:

Multi-line beech wood, the quintessential natural product, it is very elegant!
Compact laminated wood has the appearance of precious wood while maintaining a good price-quality ratio. Easy to clean and maintain.
3-ply larch wood is ultra strong and particularly resistant to bending. In addition, this wood species has one of the most natural appearances.
Laminated wood is obtained by gluing strips of solid wood. The little plus: depending on the colors of the strips used, the result is totally unique.

Installation and maintenance of a wooden backsplash ⚒️

Install your wooden backsplash like a pro

First, your surface must be clean and dry.
Directly on your backsplash, apply the wood glue in a cross shape at strategic points 💪
For the trickiest part, glue little by little from the bottom up to ensure optimal bonding.
Then, press down for several seconds in the middle and on the corners to ensure the glue takes effect.
Let dry easily for 48 hours (and there you have it).

Treat/protect to last longer!

To ensure your wooden backsplash shines brightly for a long time, I advise you to varnish it or apply a natural protective oil (or not 🤔) directly during installation. Then, to ensure you always have top-notch protection, the best is to treat it at least twice a year!

Little tip: depending on the result you want to achieve, you can apply an oil on your wooden backsplash to get a darker, shiny, or lacquered color. As they say, to each their own 👌

Your custom-made wooden backsplash may be exposed to water from time to time, no problem. There is a foolproof technique by applying a waterproofing product, a bit like for your leather shoes!
