What metal thickness for your projects?

You have a custom metal cutting project in mind, but you don't know which metal thickness to choose? It can sometimes be complicated to choose as it must adapt to the weight, the location, and a function.

⚙️ The different metals and their thicknesses!

Stainless steel plate range

Used for many interior creations like kitchen backsplashes or outdoors, stainless steel (or steel inox) offers a wide range of thicknesses from 1mm to 10mm for more demanding needs.

Aluminium plate range

One of the most stylish metals, aluminium shines with its lightness in all circumstances. Easy to drill or bend, this metal adapts to all types of uses with thicknesses ranging from 1 mm to 10 mm.

Steel plate range

Certainly, the most robust in John Steel's metal range, steel sheet allows for greater thicknesses at a lower cost, but beware of the weight. With its raw and industrial look, its thickness can vary from 1 mm to 20 mm.

⚙️ What stainless steel thickness to choose?

With its anti-rust properties, stainless steel is one of the metals most used in custom cutting. A true chameleon, it will allow your project to resist both dry and humid environments.

Obviously every project is unique and therefore the thicknesses can vary depending on the chosen purpose. But don't worry, we are here to help you avoid errors in thickness selection.

But it is possible to give you some usage advice for the different thicknesses. Less resistant to weight than raw steel, stainless steel most often has a thickness ranging from 1 mm – 1.5 mm or even 2 mm. Worktop in stainless steel, custom-cut range hood liners or door handle protectors, do not require a significant thickness.

Depending on the project, your plate may need to support a weight. Obviously, you will need to choose higher thicknesses if necessary.

⚙️ What aluminium thickness to choose?

Light and flexible, the aluminium sheet allows for simple and easy installation of your custom cut. Used for projects similar to stainless steel, aluminium, however, allows for a real weight gain depending on the thicknesses.

But just because it is lighter does not mean it is not resistant, quite the opposite. Often used with a thickness of 1.5 mm in kitchens for making backsplashes and range hood liners, anti-fingerprint aluminium is ultra easy to clean.

Available in greater thicknesses, it is perfectly possible to use raw aluminium to make privacy screens, lattices, door plates, or even road signs.

⚙️ What steel thickness to choose?

Chosen by the construction sector, steel sheet is a metal that has made history with its interesting characteristics and its possibilities for use.

Available in several steel grades at John Steel, this material allows for many projects and creations to be carried out.

With its many thicknesses ranging from 1 mm for galvanised steel to 20 mm thick for the highly sought-after raw steel. Requiring very little maintenance, the steel plate is, however, not rust-resistant unlike stainless steel.

Whether to make furniture, a steel floor covering, or stairs, for this type of creation you will have the possibility to choose from thicknesses ranging from 1 mm to 20 mm.

Merci pour votre message.

Nous proposons une seule épaisseur standard pour ce type d’usage : 4 mm de tôle inox 1 mm supplémentaire pour les larmes antidérapantes, soit un total de 5 mm. C’est largement suffisant pour supporter le poids d’un homme en toute sécurité, notamment pour un accès à un vide sanitaire.

bonjour
j'ai une table en chêne faites par mon papa il y a 20 ans, le plateau seul doit peser dans le 30KG
j'ai enlevé les pattes et acheté des pieds en métal mais je dois reposer ceux-ci sur le plateau.
mais en dessous il y a des différences de niveaux je souhaiterais donc y fixer une plaque en acier ou inox ou autres sur le pourtours du plateau il y aurais 12 points de fixation sur le plateau bords et milieu
quelle épaisseur me conseillez-vous ?

L'utilisation de l'acier corten en intérieur est effectivement déconseillée, surtout pendant sa période de formation de rouille. De plus, une fois le processus de rouille sur l'acier corten terminé, il peut laisser des résidus sur votre sol.

Pour une couvertine extérieure, nous recommandons une épaisseur de 1,5 mm minimum, en particulier si vous optez pour de l'aluminium. Sinon, le matériau pourrait se détériorer avec le temps.

Cela dépend votre souhait esthétique.
Le corten est ce que nous trouvons le plus adaptés, mais c'est un parti-pris, car nous aimons cet acier.
Sinon, vous pouvez prendre de l'inox brossé, et si vous souhaitez peindre pour avoir une couleur spécifique, de l'inox classique.
