How to reduce the price of laser-cut metal plates?

Whether you're new to design software or not, it's important to know the tricks that allow you to reduce the price of your metal sheet cuts on our online cutting tool John Steel. 

💰 Reduce the price by choosing the right metal

First, before rushing in, take a moment to think about which type of metal best suits what you want to create.

• For example, for a metal sheet that will live outdoors like a gate, you should consider stainless steel because it doesn't rust and withstands outdoor conditions.

You'll say, we could very well use galvanized steel, the so-called rust-proof one. It's equally resistant, treated to be rust-proof, and the price will be lower than for stainless steel. A good option for smaller budgets, but let's keep that between us 😉

The most important thing is not to choose just any metal. Depending on the use and your needs, there will always be a suitable metal sheet.

• For indoor use, prioritize stainless steel and aluminum.
• For a backsplash or a protective panel behind a stove, pieces to be mounted on a wall, opt for lightweight metals: aluminum or stainless steel. Generally, a brushed finish is used, which is nicer to look at and especially very trendy.
• If you plan on food contact, like a countertop? Choose 304L stainless steel, it's the safe bet!
• For use in a medical environment, 316L stainless steel is the quintessential stainless steel sheet. Hygienic and resistant to chemical attacks (disinfectant products, repeated passages, etc.), it's the right metal for the job.
• If your sheet will serve as a load-bearing plate or to cover a crawl space,  you need to opt for a strong and sturdy metal. Steel is what you need simply because it supports weight under all circumstances. If in addition your steel sheet needs to be non-slip, chequer plate will ensure your safety and robustness! Planning a large sheet for a certain load to pass (like mammoths crossing a grand canyon😂)? Then plan to reinforce the sheet from underneath before use.

There you go, you've chosen your material? It's time to choose the right finish or grade for your metal sheet. Now that both parameters are checked off your list, it's time to choose the thickness of your stainless steel, aluminum, or steel piece.

⚠️ Don't forget, the thicker it is, the higher the price. So don't make this choice lightly, especially if you plan to mount your metal cutout on a wall. In that case, to avoid a nasty surprise, I recommend you go for a more lightweight than heavy-duty metal!

✔️ Example n°1: for a plancha on a barbecue, a minimum thickness of 6 to 8 mm is required to prevent the stainless steel sheet from warping under heat. So it's absolutely not necessary to go thicker.

❌ Example n°2: for creating a wall protection, choosing steel is not recommended because it is simply too heavy and not suitable for this type of installation.
