Corten sheet, also known as korten, is a mild steel that develops a characteristic rusty patina over time. When you buy a custom Corten steel plate, it comes in 'as-rolled' condition, with very little rust. A period of oxidation is necessary to achieve the distinctive, stabilized look of weathered corten.
This steel is especially recommended for outdoor use, due to its design aesthetic suitable for gardens or urban settings. For indoor use, it is preferable that the steel has reached an advanced stage of oxidation before installation. A varnish or wax can be applied, provided the surface is dry and clean.
The characteristic rusty hue of corten steel is the result of the addition of alloys such as copper, chromium, nickel and molybdenum. Steel is considered fully oxidized when it leaves almost no traces or dirt to the touch. At this point, the oxide layer is strong enough that it won't rub off on clothing.
This steel forms a layer of self-protecting patina which protects it from atmospheric corrosion. The oxidation process can be accelerated by sandblasting followed by alternating exposure to humidity (by watering) and dryness, as frequently as possible.
(*) Raw material, this sheet has more or less significant scratches.
