Aspect
Known for its unique rusted finish, corten (or korten) steel is a mild steel with a natural patina. At the time of purchase, the custom-made corten steel plate has a 'rough-rolled' appearance, i.e. slightly rusty. To obtain corten's famous patinated and stabilized appearance, an oxidation process is required.
Applications
Mainly used outdoors for its decorative, designer look, corten steel sheet is perfect for embellishing a garden or urban space. Indoors, the steel must have completed its oxidation process before being installed. You can also apply a varnish or wax to a clean, dry surface.
Features
Corten sheet steel acquires its rusty appearance from alloys such as copper, chromium, nickel and molybdenum. Steel is considered sufficiently oxidized when it ceases to leave marks or dirt. At this point, the oxide is strong enough not to stain clothing. Corten steel develops a self-protecting patina that protects it from atmospheric corrosion.
To accelerate oxidation, steel can be sandblasted and then exposed to alternating wet and dry conditions as often as possible.
