How to waterproof wood ?

Constantly exposed to the elements, wood undergoes numerous changes over time. Grease, liquid splashes, and moisture are all factors that can alter the appearance of your beloved wood backsplash, causing unsightly stains or rings to appear.

🧰 What product to waterproof wood?

To ensure the waterproofing of your wood panels, you will need to use a waterproofing oil specially designed for wood. This is the most effective method to protect wood from moisture and external aggressions.

How to seal wood?

Now it's time to put your DIY skills to work to seal your wood countertop. Ready? Let's go!

Shake your oil can

This may seem basic, but it's a step often overlooked. Make sure to shake the can of oil well before use to mix the components that may have separated. This ensures an even application and a flawless finish.

First coat of oil on the wood

After thoroughly shaking the can of oil and preparing your wood surface, proceed to apply the first coat of oil. Use an appropriate brush and apply the oil generously to the wood panel, ensuring to follow the direction of the wood grain.

Painting in the direction of the grain allows for optimal oil penetration and ensures maximum protection.

Let dry for 2 hours

The important step in this process is to let your wood panel dry completely. It is recommended to allow a drying time of at least 2 hours before considering applying a new coat.

This time allows the oil to penetrate deep into the wood fibers and provide optimal protection.

Second coat of oil on your wood

It is now time to move on to the application of the second coat of oil on your wood. This step is essential to ensure reinforced protection and a flawless finish.

Let dry for another 2 hours

After applying the second coat, it is essential to allow, once again, a drying time of 2 hours.

Once this time has passed, and if the wood seems well-dried and ready, you can finally proceed to apply the final coat of oil on the panel.

Third and final coat of oil

Conclude the process by carefully applying the final coat of protective oil on your wood.

This final phase reinforces the protective barrier established by the previous coats, maximizing defense against moisture and other harmful elements.

Why doesn't wood resist water under normal conditions?

Let's start by understanding the relationship between wood and water – they get along well, but at a distance! Wood, full of plant fibers, is naturally permeable and, fundamentally, it is not really designed to resist water and splashes.

Whether due to ambient humidity or regular exposure to water, wood can undergo undesirable deformations. In jargon, we say that wood "works," meaning it swells by absorbing moisture and retracts when the air becomes dry again.

We all know this phenomenon, especially in old houses, where wooden beams start creaking in the middle of the night. Certain materials, specially designed to resist water, are waterproof, such as the black Valchromat MDF panel, which is 100% waterproof.

Bonjour,
J’aimerais créer un plan de travail de cuisine en contreplaqué avec la tranche apparente de tous les plis et en fonçant légèrement la teinte du bois. Jaime bien le brou de noix pour foncer la teinte du bois, pensez-vous que ce soit compatible avec une utilisation en cuisine ? Je me demande surtout comment rendre ensuite étanche le contreplaqué avec un produit mat, non toxique et durable ?

Le brou de Noix est possible néanmoins je vous conseille de faire des essais sur des chutes pour éviter les mauvaises surprises (réaction hétérogène du contreplaqué).

En ce qui concerne la protection je vous proposes l'huile - cire dure très mate.
Par exemple Osmo propose une huile supérieure qui est à base d'huiles et cires végétales naturelles.

Bonjour, j'ai un plan de travail traité à l'huile de lin mais je ne trouve pas son étanchéité suffisamment efficace. Le traitement est récent, comment puis-je faire ?

Si votre plan de travail traité à l'huile de lin n’est pas assez étanche, voici quelques conseils :

1. Utilisez un mélange renforcé : Mélangez l'huile de lin avec un peu de térébenthine ou d'huile dure (comme l'huile de Tung). Cela améliore la pénétration et la durabilité.

2. Alternative si l'huile ne suffit pas : Envisagez un vernis ou une résine transparente, mais cela annule l’aspect naturel de l’huile de lin.

Bonjour peut on mettre de l huile hydrofuge après l application d un vernis marin. Je l aperçois que le vernis n'est pas assez étanche

L’application d’huile hydrofuge sur un bois déjà verni peut être complexe. En général, le vernis ne se lie pas bien à l’huile. Si le bois a été verni, l’huile peut ne pas adhérer correctement, ce qui peut entraîner des taches ou une finition inégale. Si vous souhaitez appliquer de l’huile sur un bois verni, il est essentiel de bien préparer la surface. Cela peut inclure le ponçage du bois pour enlever l’excès de vernis et l’application d’un produit de dégraissage.

Cependant, certains vernis, comme le vernis à l’huile ou le vernis pour yacht, peuvent être plus compatibles avec le bois verni. Il est toujours recommandé de faire un test sur une petite zone avant d’appliquer l’huile sur l’ensemble de la surface.

Bonjour. J’ai utilisé de l’huile hydrofuge teintée blanche il y a 10 ans sur le plateau de ma table à manger (vendu sous l’appellation huile-cire). Aujourd’hui je souhaite la retirer car elle n’est plus hydrofuge et pour retrouver la teinte bois. Mais je n’y arrive pas. J’ai essayé le ponçage (le papier s’encrasse), le décapage (chimique et thermique). Rien n’y fait. Comment retirer ce produit ?! Auriez-vous une ou des astuces ? Je vous remercie

La seule solution est de faire un ponçage.
Papier ponce, ponceuse électrique, autre moyen technique.

L'huile s'est surement incrusté dans la surface.
Vous n'allez jamais retrouver une couche de bois naturel.
Le plus simple est d'appliquer une lazure de surface qui ressemble à la couleur naturel recherchée.

J'ai 2 questions :
- l"huile hydrofuge est-elle naturelle car je tiens à garder mon plan de cuisine en contact avec les aliments le plus naturel possible
- il me parait logique de traiter avant encastrement des éléments pour les écoulements, mais quelqu'un m'a dit que cela empêcherait le silicone de coller

- Concernant l’huile hydrofuge, il est important qu’elle soit notifiée “Food Contact Compliance”. Chez John Steel nous proposons également le vernis pour bois adapté aux contactes alimentaires “Le Suprême” de Mauler, qui est ultra résistant aux taches, à l’usure et l’abrasion.

- Il est possible de coller les éléments après la pose du vernis, mais le mieux est effectivement de le faire au préalable.
