Corten steel plate, or korten, is a type of mild steel that acquires a distinct rusty appearance over time. When purchasing a custom corten steel plate, it will have a 'raw rolling' appearance, i.e. slightly rusty. It is necessary to allow an oxidation time to achieve the patinated and stabilized appearance typical of corten.
Corten steel plate is ideal for outdoors, bringing a touch of modern design to gardens and urban settings. For indoor use, it is recommended to allow corten steel to completely oxidize before installing it. The application of varnish or wax is possible, but the surface must be completely clean and dry.
The rusty appearance of corten steel sheet comes from the incorporation of alloys such as copper, chromium, nickel and molybdenum. Oxidation is considered complete when the steel leaves practically no traces on contact. At this time, the oxide layer is durable enough not to dirty clothes. This steel forms a self-protective patina which protects it from atmospheric corrosion.
Oxidation can be accelerated by sandblasting followed by repeated exposure to wet and dry conditions.
